New STAR TREK Trailer

As you probably know, a new trailer for J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek was released over the weekend.

I wanted to take a minute and talk a little about it.

(You can watch it here, if you haven’t seen it.  Go ahead, I’ll wait.)

All set?

Okay, let’s go.

First off, you can’t tell much from the trailer.  Kirk’s apparently somewhat aimless before joining Starfleet and stuff blows up.  Really, that’s all I can piece together from it.

I don’t want to nitpick, because I honestly do want to enjoy this movie.  I’m a fan of a lot of Abrams’ work (Lost, Cloverfield, Fringe… even Mission: Impossible 3 wasn’t terrible) in top of being a Trekkie.

Or Trekker, if you prefer.

Anyway, I know this is the first full trailer (the teaser can be seen at the linked page above), so it’s mostly eye candy to get you interested, but, why a car crash with Robocop cybernetic security officer?

There’s really not much else to say except that aside from the exterior, the Enterprise has been heavily redesigned.  The uniforms are fairly close to the original series’ look, which I’m grateful for.  Simon Pegg’s single line in the trailer (aside from Kirk and Spock, none of the other crew members manage that) made me smile.

That’s really I’m going to say, but I want to add one last thing– Twitter was lit up yesterday when Apple posted the official high-definition version of the trailer, a lot of it a touch nitpicky.  To quote Dan Curtis Johnson: “UTOPIA PLANITIA SHIPYARDS ARE IN ORBIT is the new HAN SHOT FIRST.”
