The King and President Kennedy

I’m talking about Bubba Ho-Tep. The movie had a limited theatrical release in 2002, which (combined with the participation of Bruce Campbell) earned it cult status by the time the DVD hit stores.

Based on a novella, the story is simple: Elvis, sick of the fame and pressure of being Elvis, makes a deal with one of his impersonators to trade places. The now-elderly Elvis is in a rest home in Texas where a mummy is sucking the souls of residents to live. When fellow resident JFK realizes what’s going on, he enlists the aid of the King to combat the undead soul-eater.

The movie is as awesome as it sounds. Campbell’s Elvis is pitch-perfect. His voice and mannnerisms, the makeup and costume– Bruce Campbell is Elvis.

Simple as that.

I know I mentioned before that mummies are kind of lame– and I stick by that statement for the most part– but Bubba Ho-Tep avoids this by keeping the titular mummy concealed in shadows for much of the film. It doesn’t hurt that Ho-Tep is more than a guy in Ace bandages and toilet paper.
